definitely A LOT easier than i thought it would be.

Atherton to downtown SJ in about 105 minutes - including about 10 min of getting lost.  Nice and flat most of the way too.

If i wasnt injured and didnt do 30 miles of morning hills, i think i could do it in the 80 min mark with 48x18, maybe even faster with x16.

benitosan - do you ride this route from san carlos?

i live in San Mateo, i ride to Palo Alto for work, and sometimes i ride to San Jose to hang out w/ the kids...

i seldom take the surface streets anymore cuz of the wacky drivers on the Peninsula,
i'm mostly a Bay Trail guy now.  the Bay Trail starts in Millbrae by SFO, and is mostly
continuous all the way to Redwood City, you have to bike along the frontage road at
points, but the Bay Trail actually extends all the way almost to Sunnyvale now.

when i was roadie/mtb'ing alot, i used to take the Alameda de las Pulgas, Canada Road,
and Foothill Expressways alot, but now being mainly fixed, i use the flatter routes
like the Bay Trail, Middlefield, and anything east of El Camino, but i can still knock out most hills.

51 x17, 50 x17, 49 x17 most of my bikes are set-up with these ratios cuz i still occasionally
like the skidtricks too, plus i ride alot of hills exclusively brakeless in SF and need to skid alot.

whats up benitosan,

i was wondering, do those gear ratios help you skid easier(like not having to lean forward at all)?  i ride a 49 x 16 and i almost always have to put a little lean into it, cant just skid completely sitting. thanks!

yeah 49x17 is a fairly low gear for me, but since i ride alot of uphills/downhills in SF, i kinda need the lower gearing.

yes, i skid mostly hovering above the saddle, i don't lean forward, its just not efficient or controlled (or stylish, haha)

i hopskid and checkskid mostly in daily riding.  i rarely whipskid or leanskid unless playing around in a park.  that's it.
